Under the auspices of H.E. Dr Nabil El Araby, Secretary General of the Arab League and H.E. Dr. Hassan Younis Minister of Electricity and Energy of Egypt and President of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministerial Council of Electricity and Mr James Moron European Union Ambassador to Egypt, the “Arab Forum on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency under the theme of “Building Financing Partnerships” was held on the 23-24 April 2012 at the Arab League Headquarters.

The Arab Forum was organized by the League of Arab states’ Energy department in coordination with the Secretariat of Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity and in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt through its Project Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean ( MED-ENEC), the Euro-Mediterranean Energy Market Integration Project (MED-EMIP), the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), and UN-ESCWA.

H.E. Dr. Nabil El- Araby pointed out that “…the Arab spring has created a new spirit calling for change in the region and enabling the Arab People to possess the final word on how to best use their natural resources. The adoption of modern methodologies geared towards the exploitation of renewable energy sources and improved energy efficiency measures must be at the heart of this change.”
As increased interest about this event surpassed the Arab World and reached to decision-makers in Europe and Asia, Dr. Hassan Younis, Minister of Energy and Electricity of Egypt stated that “…this financing partnership forum indicates the worldwide concerns with Renewable Energy, Energy Security, Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency which are global challenges, but can be faced by joint public & private sector’s efforts.” He also underlined that this forum is a yielding action to activate our objectives and to enhance more constructive cooperation all over the world.

Various other Arab and International Agencies, actors, authorities, etc. have participated. Amongst the distinguished participants are Minister of Energy of Palestine, Dr. Omar Kittaneh, H.E Eng. Qutaiba Abu Qourah, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan, H.E. Dr. Awad Al-Baraasi, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energies of Libya MrTarekAmer- President of National Bank of Egypt, Mr Yasser Hassan- President of Egypt Bank, Mr Giuseppe De Beni, Head of the Italian Firm ITALGEN, in addition to high profile representatives from the European Investment Bank, European Bank for Development and the list certainly include influential figures in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The forum was sponsored and supported by active players in the energy market such as Schneider electric, Italgen and Siemens, who also actively participated in the sessions proceedings.
The Agenda addressed issues which directly affect the financing of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency projects. ”Building Financial Partnerships” is aiming to strengthen the Arab and European efforts for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
